How we approach gravel driveways in Central Texas
We offer Gravel Driveways in Kyle, San Marcos, Dripping Springs, Smithville, Bastrop and other cities in the Central Texas area. For a new installation we scrape the top layer of topsoil and get to the subsoil. We pack it in with our skid steer tracks and lay down 6" of road base and compact to a minimum of 4" after compaction to get a stable foundation and smooth surface. We always recommend putting a top coat of #57 crushed limestone on top of the road base and compacting again. This not only leaves a much nicer look, it keeps you out of the caliche dust and sticky splatter it creates when wet. It's not always necessary to put limestone on top, and it will save you a lot of money to use road base only. Long 1/8 mile or longer driveways and ranch roads can be a lot more affordable when using road base only. We always recommend wetting the material and compacting with a vibratory compacter to lock the road base and crushed limestone into place.
